For the next six years, while reaching the position of manager, he developed the skills necessary for maintaining his own practice. At this small firm, he was involved in all aspects of a practice, including client relationships, review and tax planning. In 1990, he left the local firm and began his own practice in New Jersey. This practice consisted mainly of contractors whose contract revenue approached $15 million. The services rendered for these clients consisted of audits, reviews, tax preparation, and planning. In 1997 most of the contractors had retired, sold and closed their businesses and at this point Charles and his family moved to Arizona to develop a practice there. Upon his arrival in Arizona, he contracted with a small CPA firm in Tempe. With Charles' expertise, the practice increased their annual revenues by 20% per year during the six years he spent there. Charles attempted to purchase the practice but after a year of planning and negotiations, the owner decided not to sell, terminated negotiations, and Charlie and Julie left to begin their own practice at their present location.
